“I can’t believe that I’m doing this” Mrs. Nguyen muttered, as she flexed her left palm. She watched in disgust as her bright red blood trickle into the glass. Happy and Dopey watched her from the floor, stretching their short necks as far as they could, while tilting their heads to the left, then to the right.

“Don’t drink blood, fur babies” she said, as she took the glass through the kitchen door to the garage.

She found Aiden sitting upright in the backseat of her Buick. “Here” she snapped, as she handed the glass to him. “How much more do you need? You are gonna’ drain me dry for sure!”

Aiden took the warm glass with a small sigh as he thanked her; he noticed that there was a generous inch of blood in it. He drained the glass in one gulp, then swept his tongue over his lips.

“Your blood sugar is a little high today, bà ngoai. You really should cut back on the soda.”

Mrs. Nguyen glared at Aiden in silence. She thought – You should be able to notice the changes in my blood sugar. You are a goddamn vampire angel, after all.

She didn’t notice the small smile that formed on Aiden’s lips.

“You know grandmother…I think that I may be able to stand and walk about.”

To save Mrs. Nguyen any further embarrassment, he wrapped the blanket around his hips before getting up. She noticed that he raised himself up from the backseat using both of his arms.

“Well – let’s see what you can do, boy” she stated. Mrs. Nguyen crossed her scrawny arms over her flat chest. She smiled inwardly, delighted that Aiden took to calling her grandmother…bà ngoai…never mind the fact that she never had children or grandchildren of her own, let alone any white ones.

Aiden stood up slowly, then took a few tentative steps. His right leg was almost as good as his left.

“I’m almost there!” he said, with a smile, displaying his perfect white teeth. Suddenly, he frowned.

“What’s the matter?” Mrs. Nguyen asked, exasperated. “You’ll be walking around fine in no time!”

Aiden’s eyes rolled up to his fluttering broken wing. When he brought his gaze back to Mrs. Nguyen, he said quietly “We have to remove what’s left of my wing and burn it.”

She backed away from him, while shaking her head. “We? No! No way am I gonna’ help you with that! No way!”

“Bà ngoai, please. I can’t walk around with one torn, bloody wing.” He turned so that his broad back faced Mrs. Nguyen. “And…I’ll need stitches. Could you patch me up?”

She shook her head vehemently. “I’m not a damn doctor! I’m not a damn nurse! And with that wing, I’m not a goddamn vet either!”

Mrs. Nguyen’s outburst gave Aiden an idea. It was an outrageous idea…that could possibly also work.

“You have a veterinarian for Happy and Dopey, right?” he asked.

Mrs. Nguyen was stone silent. Her cheeks burned red before she finally exploded.

“Are you completely out of your goddamn mind? How could I ever begin to explain you to Dr. Santos? No…hell no!”

Aiden ignored the elderly woman’s outburst. “Does he make house calls at all?”
